Will Dr. Brenda “twist” my neck and will it hurt?
As an experienced chiropractor, Dr. Brenda uses many different chiropractic techniques to fit your personal preference. Many people accustomed to chiropractic have commented that Dr. Brenda is one of the most gentle chiropractors they have ever been adjusted by.
How long will my visit last?
Your initial visit does take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete the paperwork, have your spinal exam, and adjustment. You may be referred out for x-rays if needed. Subsequent visits are approximately 15-20 minutes. We make every effort to honor your time and schedule.
Is it true that once you go to the Chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life?
The answer is not yes or no. It is “ Receive Care as Long as You Like!” Many see their chiropractor as their family doctor.
The fact is, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. Many folks choose to continue their chiropractic care on some type of periodic basis for the rest of their lives.
Others choose to see us from time to time for episodes of neck or back pain. It’s your choice. However, this concern is prompted by two common questions:
Will I get addicted to chiropractic adjustments?
No. Many people feel a pleasant sense of ease and well-being after their chiropractic adjustments. Some feel as though their power has been “turned on.”
Others feel more whole or “connected.” (This is what “normal” feels like!) Once people experience this feeling they often choose to adopt some type of ongoing schedule of care so they continue to feel this way all the time. It’s not an addiction.
Why are so many visits necessary?
By the time many people consult our practice, they’ve had their problem for some time. Retraining muscles and ligaments that support the spine takes time. Each visit builds on the ones before. Remember, you’re doing the healing, not the chiropractor!
How long you decide to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.
Do you adjust kids?
YES! We feel having your kids adjusted is imperative to their health. But relax…adjusting a baby is different than adjusting an adult and is really just fingertip pressure.
Is Chiropractic care necessary for children?
Parents report that many childhood health problems resolve with chiropractic care.
Why would a child have a spine and nervous system problem?
Traumatic births. Learning to walk. Slips. Falls. The list is endless. Yet, because children have such an adaptive capacity, these problems are often brushed off as “growing pains” or just a “phase they’re going through.”
“As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”
Many patients report that chiropractic care has been helpful for colic, ear infections, erratic sleeping habits, bedwetting, scoliosis, “growing pains” and many other common childhood health complaints.
The concern that many parents have is that chiropractic adjustments will be too forceful. They mistakenly think that their child will receive adjustments like ones they receive. Not only are adjusting techniques modified for each person’s size and unique spinal problem, an infant’s spine rarely has the long-standing muscle tightness seen in adults. This makes a child’s chiropractic adjustments gentle.
Knowing exactly where to adjust, newborns and infants are adjusted with no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Many parents have commented that they see almost instant improvements in the well-being of their child.
Will adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are “locked up” receive adjustments. The occasional spinal joints that move too much, are passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can stabilize and heal.
How many adjustments will I need?
The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their individual health goals. Many patients sense some progress within a week or two of frequent visits. Visits are less often as your spine stabilizes. In difficult cases, complete healing can take months or even years. We address each case individually. We don’t treat everyone the same or have the same mandatory treatment plan.
Why would a newborn get adjusted?
Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Colic, unusual crying, poor appetite, nursing difficulties or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, no more pressure than you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato is involved.
Can I adjust myself?
No. Some people can make their joints “pop” but that’s not an adjustment! Adjustments are specific and take years to master. Even your chiropractor must consult a colleague to benefit from chiropractic care. When you “self-manipulate” you risk ligament laxity, instability, early degeneration and could potentially hurt yourself. The need to self-manipulate is one sign that your body is not in proper alignment and a Chiropractor should be consulted.
What does an adjustment feel like?
Most patients report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. Since repeated adjustments are necessary, if adjustments didn’t feel good, patients wouldn’t return to finish their care. Chiropractors are experts at making adjustments feel good.
Can patients with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?
Of course. When developing a care plan, your chiropractor considers the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways to adjust the spine. The method selected will be best suited to your age, size and spinal problem.
Isn’t some back pain normal?
Pain of any kind, at any age, is a sign that something isn’t right. Pain is the way your body signals that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed. Since we can adapt, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off. While they may go away, if the underlying problem remains unattended, the problem can slowly worsen until it becomes more difficult and expensive to resolve.
Can I have chiropractic care after back surgery?
Yes. Rest assured that we will avoid the surgically modified areas of your spine. However, surgery may produce compensation reactions either above or below the involved level. The body may need to compensate for the modified area, causing other segments to wear-down more quickly.
What if chiropractic care doesn’t help?
If we’re unable to find and correct the cause of your particular health problem, we will refer to other experts who may be able to help. Your health and your satisfaction are our only goal.
How come my medical doctor didn’t suggest chiropractic?
That’s changing. Years of prejudice and bias are giving way to research showing the benefits of chiropractic care. Attitudes are slow to change. However, as the public demands alternatives to drugs and surgery, more and more medical practitioners are referring to chiropractors.
How long does it take for nerve irritation to be reduced?
Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take many weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Do you smoke? Are you in otherwise good condition? Within a short period, most patients sense enough progress to justify completing our recommendations.
What about my friend who only needed one visit?
It’s true there are rare instances in which a single visit can produce the pain relief that many patients seek. However, the effect is often short lived. Because underlying muscles and soft tissues have not been strengthened and retrained, a relapse often occurs. Our experience has found that when patients begin chiropractic care as adults, they have considerable structural and functional damage from years of neglect. A single “miracle” adjustment rarely produces permanent change.
